Xoloitzcuintli Zolo

Xoloitzcuintli

Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced: Sho-loist-queen-tlee) come in three sizes and two types. Recognized by Xolo Club of America SKC, UKC, CKC, FCM and FCI. Toy up to 13 inches - Minature 13 inches and up to 18 insches - Standard over 18 inches and up to 23 inches.

Xoloitzcuintli, which translates from the nahuatl language (spoken by the Aztecs and still by some indigenous people today) into "Guide Dog" because in most of the ancient Mesoamerican mythologies it was believed that the human soul, in order to go across the river of death (Mictlan River) into the underworld, had to be guided by one of this wonderful dogs. They were the representation -Nahual or alter ego- of the God Xólotl", translated as, "the god of the extraordinary things" (like twins, monstruous things and anything amazing) whose main function was to bury the sun every night (like a dog buries a bone) and bring it out of the earth again every morning to bring light and heat to the world. Xolo (Sho-lo) which is the short way to nickname the breed.

The two types consists of coated and hairless, born in the same litter. All of the above clubs accept all three sizes and two types. FCI only the hairless. Here is a link to the breeds standard. The Mexican Kennel Club (FCM)-- accepts three varieties of Xolos by size: miniature, intermediate and standard, and it doesn't recognize the coated dogs as eligible for breeding, registration or showing.

Hairless Dogs - The Naked Truth by Amy Fernandez, Rhae Kelly The authors have compiled an extraordinary encyclopedia on hairless dogs -- from antiquity to the present -- with no effort spared to find every possible reference or archive photo. It's so well done, and for the breeder or the lucky owner of a Chinese Crested (or Mexican Hairless or Xoloxcuinti), this book is indispensible. Some fun facts: the Chinese apparently used to call them "healing dogs", because the were so useful as hot water bottles for arthritic or bedridden patients. And indigenous homes of South and Central American Indians often had 30 or more hairless dogs in the house. (Without hair, they were much better adapted to a hot/tropical environment with a high flea and tick population.) Oh, another interesting fact is that of the 2,000 or so dog breeds that have existed, only some 400 are extant today. Many of them have been eaten -- and in fact, the Chinese Crested has very often been served on the dinner table in times of famine. There's even a picture of a Chinese man on a bicycle, hauling a pile of dead Cresteds... A fascinating book with many illustrations, including some excellent color photos. Highly Recommended.
