The word "Hovawart" is a German word that translates into "guardian of one's home." In reality, the Hovawart is a fairly recent breed. It 1922, breeders in Germany decided to recreate a dog that looks like dogs that one would see in pictures (scenes) of the middle ages. To do this, they bred dogs such as Newfoundland's German Shepherds, Kuvaszoks and the occasional Leonbergers. The Hovawart became recognized officially in 1937. They require a lot of exercise and need only occasional grooming.
They weigh 55 to 90 lbs. and stand 23-28" at the shoulders |
